Volunteers questions

How much time do volunteers need to give?

There is no set amount of time that volunteers are expected to give. Because of the nature of friendships, it is flexible and should fit into your normal lifestyle. As a guide, about two hours a fortnight is of great value to a friend with learning disabilities.

I have a young family. Can I still get involved?

Being a volunteer with Link Up is very flexible. Sometimes it is appropriate to take young children along with you to our events. Otherwise you can choose the times and frequency to fit in with your family arrangements.

I don't know anything about learning disabilities. Can I find out more?

Link Up provides full training for all volunteers. This includes issues such as "what is a learning disability?", communication, listening skills, confidentiality, etc. Any particular training needs you may have will be provided by Link Up to enable you to be involved safely and  appropriately.

Do I have to go into a 1:1 friendship to help?

No. 1:1 friendships are the most valuable outcome but often volunteers help in other ways such as group outings, helping at the 1:1 Club

What surprises most people to learn is that becoming a Link Up volunteer does not necessarily mean a big time commitment. Indeed some of our volunteers give 1-2 hours of their time once or twice a month, and for this small investment the return is truly enormous. In enabling someone with a learning disability to do things that most of us take for granted, you can bring about a really positive change in their life.

By building a friendship you could make a big difference in somebody’s life. You can offer your friendship in many ways:

Becoming part of the Link Up family is certainly one of the most rewarding areas of voluntary service, and it’s a great way to meet lots of interesting people from all walks of life.

What do we offer?

We can offer you a range of opportunities to suit your other commitments. You can be sure that you will have an induction and training session, careful introductions, with an experienced person as long as required, ongoing support, specialised training when needed, work alongside a highly dedicated team of staff, learn new skills and most important of all HAVE FUN!

You don’t have to be an expert. We are looking for people who are:

friendly, reliable, willing to learn &  sensitive to the needs of others

Our priority is to match our volunteers to members who share the same interests

Your Rewards

The rewards are not financial, although expenses can be paid.

Hopefully, you may find yourself:

Making new friends with other volunteers, enjoying new interests, getting out and about and visiting new places, giving and receiving friendship and happiness, becoming a valued member of your community, and much, much more.........
