Volunteer Awards 2008
To celebrate the work of Harrow's many volunteers, Harrow Council hosted Harrow's Heroes, an award ceremony and celebration to honour the work of our special community volunteers. Link Up's Transition's Officer, Ranu Mehta Radia scooped the award for 'Partnership Volunteer' in recognition of her extensive ongoing support and involvement with Harrow Council, local charities and various community groups. Over the years, Ranu has successfully built strong partnerships across Harrow which has achieved a greater understanding between various sections of the community.

BRAVA Volunteer Awards 2007 15 year old Nithiya Sritharan, is one of our young volunteers who was awarded a certificate for her great work at the Junior Club. Nithiya joined Link Up after John and Rizwana did a talk to the pupils at Heathfield School. Nithiya has been coming to the club for over a year, and her commitment and enthusiasm has been fantastic! She gets on really well with kids and parents alike. BRAVA held a ceremony to award volunteers from Brent for contribution to the community by playing an active part through their work as volunteers. The ceremony was held at Brent Town Hall on Friday 22 June 2007. The Brent Mayor and other councillors were present as well as MP Sarah Teather for Brent East. There were volunteers from all walks of life, and involved in many projects. It was a great evening and we are all very proud of Nithiya’s achievement. We’d like to wish Nithiya the best in all she does and hope that she continues to support the Junior club. Well done Nithiya!
Chiltern Youth Awards 2007 The Chiltern Youth Awards ceremony took place on 21st February 2007 where Link Up volunteer, Shamil Jobanputra scooped an award for his dedicated contribution to the 1:1 Computer Club. The Youth Cabinet also choose Shamil as winner of the "young people's person of the year" for his outstanding voluntary service to the community. Link Up and Family Learning have been organising computer classes for children and young people with learning disabilities since April 2003. Shamil has been helping for the last two years as part of the Sai School Youths and has helped a young man with quite complicated needs, using specialist software. This required a lot of patience and perception from Shamil. Since April 2005 Shamil has been coordinating a group of young volunteers who help at these classes. He has been reliable, very hard working and was committed enough to help at the classes during his exams. He is an exemplary volunteer and has shown maturity beyond his years. Link Up would like to take this opportunity to thank Shamil for his valuable time and effort and to all the other volunteers who eagerly give up their Saturday mornings to support the individual needs of our members, who over the years have significantly improved their IT skills .
2006 Papal Honour for Link Up's founder John Seymour, 79, founded Link Up over 25 years ago and has worked tirelessly in the voluntary sector raising awareness of the difficulties faced by people with Learning Disabilities. In September 2006 John was honoured with a prestigious award by the Pope for his service to the Roman Catholic Church and the local community. He was presented with the Vatican Cross by local parish priest, Robert Plourde from St Luke's Church in Love Lane.
The Queens Award for Voluntary Service 2006 The Queens Award for Voluntary Service 2006 went to the 1 to 1 Club. The club is for people with learning disabilities and their volunteer friends, offering them the opportunity to participate in a range of social activities of their choice. They have been going for over twenty years thanks to the generous efforts of a pool of long serving, dedicated volunteers. The award recognises the vital role played by the hundreds of thousands of ‘unsung heroes’ of the voluntary and community world and emphasises the importance of continuing recognition of their work.

Harrow Youth & Connexions 2005 18 year old Shradha Savani always dreamed of dancing on stage. Link Up enrolled her on the ASIA dance programme and since then she has performed to many audiences. In March 2005 Shradha scooped an award by Harrow Youth and Connexions. The awards ceremony celebrated the successes of young people in Harrow and acknowledged the challenges they have overcome at transitional stages in their lives. Shradha was up against 23 other nominees, and was given a recognition award deserving of her personal achievement in dance. Despite Shradha’s disabilities, she has shown outstanding talent in co-ordination, movement and rhythm. Shradha also took part in ASIA’s Annual Dance & Drama Show at Logan Hall in London, to a strong audience of 900 people. Head principle of ASIA, Lakshmi Samarakoon has also recognised Shradha’s talents and presented her with a certificate of achievement during the show.
National Lottery Helping Hands Award 2004
You will be proud to hear that Link Up made it as finalists in the National Lottery's 10th Birthday celebrations and their Helping Hands Award. An overwhelming number of entries were received, and the public was given the task of choosing the ultimate winner. An Oscar type entrance into the Tate Modern with paparazzi lined up against the rails clicking away, as celebrities from all walks of life came to celebrate a decade of the National Lottery, who have funded 170,000 projects nationwide. Link Up staff and some of our friends, who attended the event on Saturday 6th November2004, enjoyed every minute of it as they mingled with the stars, who were very interested in hearing about our innovative projects!

Prince's Trust Community Enterprise Award 2004 Thank You Your Highness! There is little we don’t know- or imagine we know about the heir to the throne’s life due to the news saturated culture we live in. However, did you know how many young people the Prince’s Trust have helped in the past 20 years? The Princes Trust help over 30,000 young people every year to get their lives working. Our Harrow Community Radio Project received funding for £750 towards training costs for 5 young Djs who participated in the summer broadcasts from the Harrow Carers Centre offices where the radio studio was based. David Gawn, (Inclusions Project Manager 2000-2005), was shortlisted by the Princes Trust for an annual award, and was then driven to the awards ceremony in a stretch limo. David was awarded runner's up prize and enjoyed the evening rubbing shoulders with many celebrities.
Bright Young Things Award 2004 On 16th June 2004, The Harrow Observer newspaper held a heart-warming ceremony to recognise the achievements and heroism of young people in Brent and Harrow, and organisations set up to help youngsters fulfil their potential. The Observer was inundated with nominations for the following five categories which were all sponsored by local companies: Overcoming Adversity College of North West London, Young Hero Warburtons, Young Volunteer Harrow College, Personal Achievement Observer and Business Organisation Shree Secotar Refurbishment Service (SSRS). Winning the Business Category was Link Up’s very own 1:1 Junior Club for its committed service to further the integration of special needs children into the community. SSRS presented Rizwana, Caroline and Mike with a certificate and a cheque for £100! The excitement didn’t stop there! Two of Link Up’s volunteers also walked away with achievement awards. Anish Raitatha won 1st prize in the Young Volunteer category with runner-up prize going to Abi Selva. Both have provided on-going support & commitment to our friends at Link Up. Well done !!!

RSA Young Leaders Awards 2003 On 20th September 2003 the Royal Society of Arts and the British Youth Council awarded twenty five people with RSA Young Leader Awards 2003 for their exceptional contribution made to community life and wider society. David Dawn (Inclusions Project Manager 2000-2005) was one of the winners and to celebrate this recognition he was invited to a special Awards Day at the Directory of Social Change in London. The Award Ceremony highlighted the real achievements made by the Young Leaders in their community, often set against a difficult background. In recognition of their achievements, each RSA Young Leader received a programme of personal development opportunities which includes: A one-year Fellowship of the RSA, a tailored mentoring programme with prominent individuals and RSA Fellows, access to a dedicated young Fellows website, discussion forum, e-group and the opportunity to develop a quarterly newsletter, a place on the BYC Youth at the Table training programme - teaching the skills for civic life and ‘Speak up, Speak out’ public speaking training and an invitation to attend the International Summer School for young activists.
Team of the Year Award 2003 You will be proud to hear that Link up were nominated finalists for the ‘Team of the Year’ award presented by the Department of Health as part of their annual Health and Social Care Awards. The health industry’s ’Oscar’ night took place on Tuesday 1st July 2003 at Old Billingsgate Market, London and hosted by former England football captain, Gary Linekar! The award ceremony celebrated the achievements of staff across health and social care, who deliver valuable services to other people. The finalists were made up of 48 organisations from around the UK, of which only three, including Link Up, were from the voluntary sector. As finalists, we were presented with this certificate:

Community Care Awards 2002 Link Up's Changes Nightclub project was short-listed for the National Community Care Awards 2003 and came in the top 3 learning disability projects in the country. The team were invited to the award ceremony which was held at the London Hilton Hotel.
Whitbread Award 2002 David Gawn, Inclusions Project Manager (2000-2005), was nominated as Whitbread Young Achiever and was elected Local Hero by people in Harrow in the New Year Roll of Honour.
David went down to London and was at the front of the New Year's Day parade which was on television. The Lord Lieutenant read out a letter of recognition at a special reception and there was a concert with musicians who took part in the parade.
Social Care Award 2000The Inclusions Project was nominated for the first Social Care Awards 2000. The awards were presented at Lancaster House in London by John Hutton MP at a ceremony hosted by Tony Robinson and Janet Street Porter.
