Friends questions

Will my friend be able to take me shopping?

One of the great benefits of having a friend to do things with is that you can choose between you, what you want to do. If you are both happy (and your parents/carers if you are not an adult) then you can do most of the things you like together.

When will I get a friend?

It can take a long time to find someone who is compatible with your interests and you as a person. We rely on volunteers to help so we cannot promise when we will be able to find a friend but we will try our best to find someone as soon as possible.

If I join the waiting list do I go to the bottom of the queue?

No, we will try to find someone who is the "right" kind of person for you. This may be someone who happens to come along straight away or it may take a long time.

Why hasn't my friend phoned me?

Like all friends, we need to give each other time and space. Your friend may be very busy or away on holiday. If you are worried, we will try to get in touch and find out if there is a problem. If you have their phone number or address you could try to contact them or write yourself. We can help with this if you would like us to.

Can I get on the Committee?

The group you belong to will have a Committee of its members. They will normally welcome you on to the Committee and support you if you need help to understand what's going on. The members of the Committee need to keep a balance so if you are on a Committee you may need to decide whether or not to welcome someone else on.

How much does it cost to be a member?

The Link Up service is free. You don't have to pay to be a member but if you do things together with your friend you may need to pay. Some friends take turns to treat each other when they go out together.

I can't get out much. Does that mean I can't have a friend?

Not at all. Friends enjoy staying in as well as going out. If you like to watch the TV or read we will try to find a friend with similar interests. Then you can decide between you what you like to do.

What if we have an argument or you introduce me to someone I don't like.

Link Up cannot make friendships. Although we do our best to find friends who are compatible, there are no guarantees that a friendship will develop.  However we won't give up and if it doesn't work at first, we will try again.
