Go for I.T. The 1:1 Computer Project was set up to provide children with learning disabilities the opportunity to develop IT skills. We put together a tailor made programme to meet their individual needs with support from young teenage volunteers from Sai School of Harrow and Heathfield School who are eager to give up their Saturday mornings to assist our members. We are proud to say that the club is going from strength to strength and is now in it's 4th year. It’s a very safe and happy environment for our young clients with learning disabilities where they can develop computer skills as well as build friendships with our team of young volunteers. The free 10 week sessions which take place per school term was possible with the support of Family Learning and Stanmore College.
Every member who has registered has a different level of competence and aptitude and on the first day of each programme our IT tutor would speak to each child and their parent on what they expect from the course. This information is then relayed back to the volunteers to establish how to give the children one to one support throughout the duration of the course.
One of our members, Joseph has learnt skills in Power Point, Excel and Internet and his parents commented on the 1:1 Computer Project: "It is commendable that young students give up their time to supervise which has enabled my child to keep up with his peers at school" Over the years the 1:1 Computer Project has been privileged to welcome a few special guests to see our inspirational work. During our first year former Junior Minister for Education, Stephen Twigg paid us a visit and was most impressed with this initiative. In January 2004, the High Commissioner of India and his wife were invited to one of our sessions. They were very impressed with the project and how it meets the requirements of all students.

Computer Club Hero The Chiltern Youth Awards ceremony took place on 21st February 2007 where volunteer, Shamil Jobanputra scooped an award for his dedicated contribution to the 1:1 Computer Project. The Youth Cabinet also choose Shamil as winner of the "young people's person of the year" for his outstanding voluntary service to the community. Shamil has been helping for the last two years as part of the Sai School Youths and has helped a young man with quite complicated needs, using specialist software. This required a lot of patience and perception from Shamil. Since April 2005 Shamil has been coordinating a group of young volunteers who help at these classes. He has been reliable, very hard working and was committed enough to help at the classes during his exams. He is an exemplary volunteer and has shown maturity beyond his years.

Thanks to the club it has resulted in many children achieving far more, both socially and educationally. Starting off with very basic computer skills, the children have now gained confidence in knowing their way round a computer, producing high standards of work.
